Maryland Massage Therapy Continuing Education Requirements

Massage therapy continuing education requirements for license renewal vary from state to state and the laws are constantly changing. It is our current understanding that Maryland requires massage therapists to complete 24 CE hours every 2 years for license renewal, of which 1 CE hour must be in diversity or cultural competency, 3 CE hours must be in ethics or jurisprudence AND 3 CE hours must be in communicable diseases (to include HIV/AIDS). (The remaining 17 hours must be in massage-related courses.)

What We Can Do For You!

  • You may take all CE 24 hours through our home study programs.
  • You can use our various ethics, communicable disease and diversity/cultural competency continuing education courses to satisfy Maryland's specific topic requirements. Or you can choose from our specially priced Maryland packages that will include all of the Maryland course specific requirements.
  • Because the Institute for Integrative Healthcare Studies is approved by the NCBTMB as a continuing education Approved Provider, the Maryland Board of Massage will accept all of our 150+ courses to satisfy the 24-hour requirement with the exception of courses related to animal massage, insurance, practice building or marketing.

Special Note Regarding Implicit Bias Requirement

  1. For anyone renewing their license in Maryland after April 1, 2022 you will be required to attest to completing an approved implicit bias training program. For more information - Maryland Implicit Bias Resources
  2. This training program is only required one time. You do not need to keep taking it for subsequent renewals.
  3. There is no particular number of hours that you will need to complete, but the Board will allow up to 1 hour to go toward your total 24 hour requirement.
  4. There is no current requirement for the course to offer a certificate.
  5. The courses must be approved directly. The list of courses and additional information can be found at https://health.maryland.gov/mhhd/Pages/Implicit-Bias-Resources.aspx.
  6. Please contact the Board at 410-764-2965 with any questions you have specific to this meeting the implicit bias training requirement.

If you would like to verify this information, or have further questions regarding your massage therapy continuing education requirements, we suggest contacting the Maryland Board of Massage directly.
