Whether it’s helping people relax, achieve pain relief, regain lost sensations, improve their slumber or any other therapeutic reason, most bodyworkers spend a lot of time learning how to get results. Although massage therapy schools, textbooks and continuing education programs instruct students on how to be a great clinician, most therapists never learn how to take their knowledge one step further. This final step presents the largest challenge to many healthcare practitioners but, once mastered, transforms a clinician into a healer.

To cross the bridge from applying a healing principle to helping a client heal, the Law of Attraction must be understood and put to use. Taught by some of the greatest teachers in history, the Law of Attraction is a universal law that describes how thoughts lead the way to a realistic outcome. The basic concept behind this law is that the images you hold inside your mind – if consistently held – will manifest in the physical world. In the realm of medicine, the Law of Attraction parallels the placebo effect. Along these lines, Bernie Siegel published his book, Love, Medicine and Miracles in 1990, which asserted that the threat of disease is related to a person’s imagination, will and belief.

The lapse between most healthcare professionals and the realization of their client’s health goals could be eliminated if the practitioner actively practices the Law of Attraction. Without this practice, the following sequence describes most client-practitioner interactions:

The practitioner listens as the client describes his or her problem.

The practitioner evaluates the problem.

The practitioner devises a plan to deal with the problem.

The practitioner prescribes or performs a therapy that focuses on the problem.

The practitioner checks with the client to see if the problem has eased up.

Do you notice what every step of this interaction revolves around? All of the attention is poured onto the problem. Although this is how bodyworkers learn about safety and gain their skills, few schools teach how to shift out of a problem and into the solution. According to the Law of Attraction, maintaining a focus on any problem manifests more of the same problem, while focusing on the healthful result can actually manifest that healthful result.

Using the Law of Attraction to expedite their client’s healing process, a bodyworker’s interaction with a client would go more like this:

The bodyworker listens as the client describes his or her problem.

The bodyworker evaluates the problem.

The bodyworker devises a plan to enforce the client’s wellness.

As the bodyworker commences with the session, he or she perceives the client as healthy.

The bodyworker helps guide clients towards picturing themselves in a healthy state.

For many, the most challenging aspect of this positive thinking model is that the practitioner’s conceptualization of his or her client’s health must be real. Basically, when it comes to the Law of Attraction, you can’t fake it. Worrying about performing the massage technique correct, being concerned about the severity of your client’s health complaints, feeling sorry for how miserable your client feels or trying to picture the damaged microscopic structures involved in a client’s painful area all work against attempts at positive visualization.

It takes conscious awareness and practice to imagine your client moving freely and comfortably despite the client’s reality of being unable to stand due to pain – or believing that your client is healthy and energetic when he or she complains of the opposite. However, it can be done. And those bodyworkers who are able to capitalize on the Law of Attraction in this way effectively transition into true healers.

When bodyworkers obtain mastery of their profession, they are deemed a healer.
