Edema is a common finding in massage therapy practice, yet many therapists are uncertain about its causes, clinical significance, and appropriate massage considerations. This course provides a practical overview of edema and lymphedema from a massage therapist's perspective.
You will explore the structure and function of the lymphatic system, the relationship between inflammation and edema, and the different types of edema therapists may encounter. Learn how to recognize common signs and symptoms, identify situations that warrant referral to a healthcare provider, and understand important precautions when working with clients experiencing swelling.
The course also examines indications, contraindications, and risk factors associated with edema and lymphedema, including considerations for clients who have undergone cancer treatment, lymph node removal, radiation therapy, or other procedures that may affect lymphatic drainage.
Whether you work in a wellness, medical, oncology, rehabilitation, or general massage setting, this course will help you make more informed decisions when assessing clients with edema and understanding when massage may be appropriate, when modifications are needed, and when referral is the safest course of action.
