Louisiana Massage Therapy Continuing Education Requirements

Massage therapy continuing education requirements for license renewal vary from state to state and the laws are constantly changing. It is our current understanding that Louisiana requires massage therapists to complete 12 CE hours every year for license renewal.

To renew your Louisiana massage license you'll need a total of 12 hours every year. Your license expires each year on March 31st. These CE hours must be obtained through Louisiana Board approved courses.

Yes, however usefulness is limited. The website can be found at www.labmt.org

When is my Louisiana massage license renewal due?

Licenses must be renewed by March 31st each year. Because online renewal functionality is still not available on the Board's website be sure to MAIL your renewal to the office by the March 31st deadline.

Where do I find a paper Louisiana massage license renewal form and how do I pay for my renewal?

Paper renewal forms can be downloaded through the website by using the “License Renewal / Management Forms” tab or scrolling to the bottom of the front page at www.labmt.org. Payment in the form of a cashier’s check or money order is required with the renewal.

Does the paper renewal form apply to all licenses?

Yes, all massage professional, establishment and establishment registrations will need a paper renewal until further notice.

I’ve always renewed my Louisiana license online, should I send in a paper renewal instead?

YES, at this time the Louisiana Board of Massage advises that renewals be mailed to the office to ensure receipt by the March 31st, 2026 deadline. If you choose to wait, know that there is no guarantee that the online renewal function will be available and all renewals will need to be received by March 31st, 2026 to avoid the late fee.

What happens if I don’t receive my license by March 31, 2026?

As long as your renewal is received complete and correctly by March 31st, 2026, there will be no penalty due to the processing delay.

If I take the wrong CEU’s, my renewal is returned incomplete or my renewal is not postmarked by March 31st, 2026 will there still be a late fee?

Yes, all rules, laws, and policies regarding renewals are still in place. Continuing edcucation must be taken April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026 and registered with the Board.

Do I need to do a background check this year with my 2026 renewal?

No, there is no required background check with this renewal year.

Was the 3/31/2026 renewal deadline extended?

No – the issue with the website is causing a processing delay and the same rules apply as with each renewal year. As long as your renewal packet is complete, and received or postmarked for 3/31, there is no penalty.

Why have some licensee's received their updated license and I haven't?

Renewals that were received in January were able to be processed in the old system.

Are first-year Louisiana massage therapists required to complete CEUs?

No. Louisiana’s rule says the CE requirement does not apply during the first 12 months after a massage therapist is first licensed. The 2026 renewal notice also states that first-year applicants are not required to take CEUs their first year, although they still must renew.

Do Louisiana massage CE courses need an LCEU number?

Yes. Louisiana states that licensees are responsible for taking Louisiana State Registered continuing education and that submitted certificates must include the required LCEU course number.

Can Louisiana massage therapists carry over extra CE hours?

Yes. Louisiana’s 2026 renewal notice says CEUs beyond the required 12 taken during the prior renewal year may be carried over for one renewal cycle.

Are AMTA, ABMP, or FSMTB courses automatically accepted in Louisiana?

Not automatically. Louisiana’s renewal notice warns licensees not to assume CE is approved, including association CE from groups such as AMTA, ABMP, or FSMTB. Each course must be registered with the board by the provider.
